New Library Makerspace Opens in October

Post Date:09/18/2017 12:32 PM

If you have an interest in building things and working on craft projects, you'll be excited to learn the Main Library will open its new makerspace in October!  We've been teasing information about the room since last Spring, and in two weeks you'll find out what the new makerspace, called The Creation Station, is all about.

What's a makerspace?  These workshop areas have been a popular feature in library systems and offer a workspace for the community to utilize.  The room will be open Mondays through Fridays from 2PM to 5PM initially, and such services may be found in the basement of the Main Library.  This newly outfitted room will offer access to some pretty great equipment and tools including:

  • PolyPrinter (3D Printer)
  • Cricut Explorer Air 2 Machine
  • Sizzix Big Shot Pro Machine
  • Tool Kits
  • Sewing Machines
  • Jewelry Tool Kits
  • And More

To use The Creation Station, we will require patrons to complete an orientation class.  Two sessions will be offered next month on October 2 at 4:00PM and October 16 at 10:00AM.  Additional sessions will be hosted each month and to register for a class, contact Heather Carter at 325-676-6029.  We will also offer a video version of the class in the future to make it more accessible to the masses.

Additional courses will be offered by library staff on using specialized equipment including a Cricut Design Space Class and a Tinker CAD Design Class to orient yourself in creating your own 3D projects for printing out.

We encourage everyone to check out this new service at your Abilene Public Library in October.  If you have any questions regarding the makerspace, contact Heather Carter at 325-676-6029.
